Recently, the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) released a notable announcement: "It's not too late; use IRS Free File today." This is essentially a reminder to taxpayers that even though filing season is hectic, if you qualify, there's no need to spend money on expensive tax preparation software—you can use the free filing services offered directly by the IRS. For our Chinese community here in Austin, this is certainly welcome news for saving money, but before deciding whether to use it, we need to take a careful look at whether this tool is actually right for you.
What Is IRS Free File?
IRS Free File is a public service offered through a partnership between the IRS and a coalition of private tax software companies. It's worth noting that familiar names like TurboTax and H&R Block withdrew from the program in 2021 and 2020, respectively, so the coalition currently consists of other participating software providers. As for eligibility, as long as your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) does not exceed the threshold announced for that filing season, you can use these partner software products to file for free—and in recent years, this threshold has risen significantly compared to earlier years (for the 2026 filing season, it's expected to be roughly between $84,000 and $89,000, though the exact figure will be announced on the IRS website for that season). Even if your income exceeds this threshold, the IRS also offers Fillable Forms that anyone can use for free. One more note: the IRS's pilot official filing system, Direct File, was discontinued at the end of 2025, so Free File is now the IRS website's primary free filing channel. In short, this is the government connecting you with free, professional-grade software to handle your taxes.
What Does This Actually Mean for the Chinese Community in Austin?
In Austin, there are many recent graduates, young professionals just starting their careers, and stay-at-home parents whose income sources are relatively simple, often consisting of just a single W-2. For folks in this situation, IRS Free File is a great option. You can save tens or even hundreds of dollars in software fees by simply following the IRS website's guidance to a partner provider's platform to complete your filing and e-signature.
However, as a firm focused on our Tax Filing Guide for the Chinese Community, in serving our Chinese clients here in Austin we've found that many people's tax situations aren't as simple as they might appear on the surface. Even if your wage income falls within the Free File threshold, do you have other sources of passive income? For example, do your parents back home have savings in a bank account under your name? Or do you own rental property overseas? These situations are often overlooked, but they can create real compliance risks.
When Should You File Yourself, and When Should You Seek a Professional?
This brings us to a key question: when is it appropriate to use Free File, and when should you seek out an accountant? If your tax situation is limited to W-2 income, taking the Standard Deduction might be all you need. However, if any of the following apply to you, we recommend proceeding with caution:
First, if you have foreign financial assets. Many people in the Chinese community still maintain bank cards, wealth management accounts, or brokerage accounts back home. Under U.S. law, if the aggregate balance of your foreign financial accounts exceeds $10,000 at any point during the year, you're required to file an FBAR (Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts). The threshold for Form 8938 is higher—for example, married couples filing jointly who reside in the United States must file if their total foreign financial assets exceed $100,000 at year-end; for married couples living abroad, the threshold rises to $400,000 at year-end (or $600,000 at any point during the year). The free software versions offered through IRS Free File typically don't support this type of complex international tax reporting. If you insist on using only Free File in these circumstances, you risk missing compliance requirements and facing substantial penalties. On this topic, we recommend reading our FBAR Filing Guide in detail to make sure you don't run into trouble.
Second, if you have self-employment income (1099-NEC). Austin's thriving tech industry means many in the Chinese community take on side projects, run e-commerce businesses, or drive for Uber in addition to their main jobs. This type of income not only requires paying Self-Employment Tax, but may also involve complex calculations such as deducting home office expenses and equipment depreciation. While free software can technically handle the math, it often can't help you with the kind of tax planning a professional accountant can provide to maximize your deductions.
YZ CPA Note
YZ CPA would like to remind everyone that while using IRS Free File can save you money, "free" often means standardized and limited service. Filing taxes isn't just about filling out forms—it's about reviewing your finances from the past year and planning for the future. If you're uncertain about a particular provision during the filing process, or worried about how to report your overseas assets, don't just click "submit" without thinking it through. Tax compliance is a long-term process, and a small oversight today could result in an IRS inquiry letter years down the road. For complex tax situations, seeking help from our professional Tax Insights column or consulting a professional accountant is often the safer choice.
In short, this IRS announcement is telling us: don't panic, there's still time, and there are tools available. But as taxpayers, we need to choose the tool that's right for us. For simple tax situations, Free File is a blessing. But for members of the Chinese community in Austin dealing with cross-border assets, self-employment income, or complex investments, finding a local CPA who speaks Chinese, understands U.S. tax law, and is familiar with the Chinese community's way of life may offer greater peace of mind.
